Our proposal for the 2025 Antepavilion competition seeks to establish a new ‘address’ for the pavilion by reactivating the building on its west facing streetfront. The pavilion on Haggerston Road is a gift to the street, but it is also a way to probe the bureaucratic frameworks involved in creating and maintaining a new public space. A combination of official permissions and guerilla tactics could be sought to examine and test the usage, or misusage, of the street.

Transforming the blank wall into a hospitable space, awnings that are evocative of lively market stalls peel up from the facade to provide shade, while long timber benches create a place for people to use at all times of day or night. The flexibility of its design enables No. 23 to tap into the existing life of summertime Haggerston, while official street closures could aid more concentrated activation of both the street and rooftop elements of the structure.
